How it works
A sailboat cannot sail straight into the wind. The wedge at the top — the no-go zone, roughly 45° either side of the wind — is where the sails just flap. To get upwind you sail close-hauled on one tack, then turn through the wind (tack) onto the other.
As you steer away from the wind you pass through the points of sail — close-hauled, close reach, beam reach, broad reach, and finally running dead downwind — and you ease the sails out further at each one.

Limitations & good practice
- The angles are conventions, not fixed rules. A typical boat sails about 45° off the wind close-hauled; racing boats point higher, heavy cruisers lower. Your boat and the sea state set the real no-go angle.
- This shows the true wind angle. The wind your sails and instruments feel — the apparent wind — comes from further forward as you speed up, so sails are trimmed to that, not to this angle.
- Trim is a starting point. Set the sail roughly for the point of sail, then fine-tune with the tell-tales: ease until the sail luffs, then trim in until it just stops.
- Mind the gybe downwind. On a broad reach or run the boom is right out; an unplanned wind shift or steering error can gybe it across hard. Keep the mainsheet ready.
