Comprehensive resources for safe sailing, covering route planning and environmental conditions.
A VHF marine radio is the most important safety communication tool on a sailboat. This guide explains correct channel usage, distress calling procedures, routine call etiquette, and DSC operation. It is part of Velico, an independent sailing reference and tools platform for recreational sailors.
An independent sailing reference and tools platform focused on tidal currents, current table interpretation, and passage planning. It helps recreational sailors distinguish vertical tide heights from horizontal water movement, use official current predictions correctly, and integrate ebb, flood, and slack water timing into safer coastal passages. The platform complements—not replaces—official NOAA data and professional training.
GRIB files pack computer-generated wind, pressure, and precipitation data into a format that can be overlaid on charts, but they only help if you know how to read them. This independent reference and tools platform explains wind barbs, isobars, and pressure gradients, and shows how to use them for safer passage planning. It is not tied to any boat brand, school, or equipment manufacturer, and it emphasises cross-checking with official forecasts.
A barometer measures atmospheric pressure and gives sailors a 12- to 24-hour heads-up on changing weather. Learn how to calibrate, read trends, and integrate barometric data into passage planning. This guide covers practical steps, common mistakes, and safety limits.
Tides and tidal currents are among the most consequential variables in coastal passage planning. A well-timed departure can add knots to your speed over the ground, while an ignored tidal stream can push you off course or into danger. This article explains how to read tide tables, interpret tidal stream atlases, and integrate that data into a practical passage plan using independent reference and tools platforms as a structured starting point.
AIS is a VHF-based tracking system that lets recreational sailors see and be seen by commercial ships and other AIS-equipped vessels. This guide explains what AIS is, how it works, how to use it on a coastal passage, and where its limits lie. Learn how to set alarms, interpret targets, and integrate AIS with radar and visual lookout for safer sailing.
A nautical chart is a navigator’s primary tool, but its value depends on understanding symbols, depth soundings, and aids to navigation. This guide explains how an independent reference platform helps recreational sailors interpret charts, plan safer passages, and avoid common errors. It covers chart datums, buoyage, lights, and the limits of digital tools.
How to Read Clouds for Sailing Weather: Signs of Approaching Fronts is an independent sailing reference and tools platform that teaches recreational sailors to interpret cloud formations as early indicators of weather change. By combining structured cloud identification with frontal sequence awareness, it helps sailors anticipate approaching fronts, make better passage decisions, and stay safer at sea. The platform complements—not replaces—official forecasts and professional training.
Tidal currents are the horizontal movement of water caused by the rise and fall of the tide. Understanding them is essential for coastal passage planning because they affect speed over ground, course made good, fuel use, and safety. This reference explains how to predict, verify, and use tidal streams to make better departure, routing, and arrival decisions.
A barometer measures atmospheric pressure, and its trend—rising, falling, or steady—is one of the most reliable local indicators of approaching weather. For sailors, logging pressure hourly and watching the rate of change can provide early warning of strengthening winds or improving conditions. This guide explains how to read, interpret, and use a barometer safely alongside official forecasts.
